…‘The worst of it is,’ Tobias said, ‘I had no way of knowing whether she was still alive or not.’

‘You could ask Gem,’ Thrace suggested.

The boy nodded. ‘I could, but I’m afraid of what the answer will be.’

Silence fell for a second, as the group digested Tobias’ story, then Brother Ignatius said, ‘What was in the lorry?’

A small muscle twitched in Tobias’ face, before he said, ‘Drugs, Haitla, to be precise.’ He looked down at the deck. ‘That’s probably what he’s got stashed down there. I told you he has fingers in many pies; he’s a very greedy, dangerous man. It’s rumoured that he runs these trips, not just to deliver people to the Old City, but also to sell drugs to some of the mutants that live there.’

He licked his dry lips. ‘It’s said they used to be men, before the great catastrophe took place.’ He glanced around and lowered his voice. ‘It’s also said that the demons who live on the demon trails have become what they are because of the Haitla Bywater supplies them with.’

Elawyn stared at him in horror. If that was true, it meant she was not just the daughter of a demon, but a mutant too.
